Man-Made Disasters

Man-made disasters are events that are either intentionally or unintentional threats to public health and safety.  Since manmade disasters are unpredictable they pose a difficult threat that must be handled with awareness, and proper preparedness and reaction.

Manmade disasters can include:
  • Bioterrorism
  • Chemical Agents
  • Pandemics and diseases
  • Radiation Emergencies
  • Terrorism
A bioterrorism attack is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other germs (agents) used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants.  A chemical emergency occurs when a hazardous chemical has been released and the release has the potential for harming people's health.  Radiation is a form of energy that is present all around us. Different types of radiation exist, some of which have more energy than others.  Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation, coercion “which means force or compulsion,”  or ransom.(FEMA)  A good case for Pandemics and diseases is the 2009-H1N1 Flu.
Prevention for man-made disasters usually falls on homeland security but you can help by donating to surveys and giving scientific information to appropriate sources.  Prevention relies on this to predict future threats, and devise measures to impede them.
Preparedness, to survive on your own after a disaster. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days or more and take only essentials with you basic tools.
